About two weeks ago, rumors started showing up claiming the Vivo X11 might just be the first smartphone in the world to feature an in-display fingerprint scanner.
Well, it seems this is about to happen thanks to a new announcement made by Qualcomm at the ongoing Shanghai MWC 2017, but the Vivo X11 is out of the question, instead, the Vivo XPlay 6 will be the first smartphone to showcase how fingerprint sensors for display and metal should work.
Qualcomm has just announced a new form of technology that will allow future smartphones to come with fingerprint scanners under the display. Apparently, the American chipset maker has confirmed that it will be working closely with Vivo Communication Technology to demonstrate the new technology with the help of modified versions of the Vivo XPlay 6.
There are two sets of Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors. One group will work perfectly on glass and metal while the other is for display, glass and metal. Both sets utilize the company’s ultrasonic technology, but the former can be placed under metal or glass (but not under a display screen) while the latter can be used under a display screen.
Commercial samples for the fingerprint sensor for display will be available as from October 2017, but the first devices to use them commercially will hit the market in the summer of 2018. As for the fingerprint sensors for glass and metal, commercial samples will be available this coming month of July while the first devices to use them will be here in early 2018.
In short, we should expect to see samples of the glass and metal fingerprint sensors on the Vivo XPlay 6 starting this July.
