Tesla to Start Taking Pre-orders for Solar Roofs in April – Just What Kenya – and Africa – Needs to Solve Power Shortages and Cost

Google confirmed that it will be switching off reliance on the highly unreliable and extra-costly man-made power and turning on 100% reliance on natural energy this 2017.

Now, if you are also looking to be part of this money-saving technique used by one of the most popular tech companies in the world, Elon Musk and Tesla have something perfect for you – Solar Roofs. According to Musk, who is Tesla’s product architect, interested parties will be able to order their Solar Roofs starting next month.

Solar Roofs are exactly what you are thinking. Your house’s entire roof will be made of shingles that have inbuilt solar cells. This way, the roof turns into a power-generating panel when the sun shines and still covers your head at night, just like other normal roofs do. Having the entire roof made of solar cells should also mean lots of energy will be generated and stored for later use compared to the conventional solar panels of today.

Despite the confirmation that Solar Roofs will be available for pre-orders starting this April, there’s still no word on when exactly they’ll be available for installation. Just like the release date, the exact pricing of these Solar Roofs is still a mystery, however, Elon Musk has hinted that they might even be way cheaper than traditional roofs, especially when looking at factors such as durability, repairs and of course, the massive energy savings they come with.

Note that this orders will probably be limited to the American market, however, Tesla has quite a number of branches in different parts of Europe, Middle East, and Asia. But so far, Africa has yet to get one, something that throws the possible availability of Solar Roofs in Kenya and Africa in general into doubt. With the many power distribution and shortage issues in Africa, having such roofs would be a dream come true for many. Hopefully, it will still be possible to ship them to these sides of the world at affordable prices.

We’ll for sure keep tabs on this matter and update you, including the pricing details.
