Tecno Mobile has made its name in Africa thanks to its classy yet affordable smartphones that have taken the market by storm, but the company wants to take this to the next level with the new Tecno PhonePad 3 phablet.
The reason we are calling it a “phablet” and not a just a tablet is because the Tecno PhonePad 3 has all the features that you’d expect to find on a smartphone, yet it ships with a huge screen size that goes beyond the smartphone realm and into the tablet world. So, without going further, here are our 5 major reasons as to why we think the PhonePad 3 is the go-to device right now, especially for the business class.
We all know how things can get nasty in the streets of Nairobi, something that could really get worse if you are carrying that laptop bag. For the business class, it has become a common thing to carry out presentations using tablets and computers, but sometimes carrying around these devices is just out of this world. Enter the Tecno PhonePad 3 phablet.
Measuring just 188mm tall and an amazing 7.85mm thick, the Tecno PhonePad 3 is one of the most convenient devices you can carry around. For this size, this device will easily fit in one’s pocket or that handbag that ladies carry around without exposing what is in there. One thing that has meant the phablet remains this compact is that lack of physical navigation and home buttons, which usually occupy a huge space on the bottom bezel. Now that they are on-screen, the bezels are quite small, leaving room for a bigger 7-inch display screen.
Speaking of display, the 7-inch HD LCD screen on the PhonePad 3 is big – bigger than any smartphone you can find on the Kenyan market. This will give you decent space for viewing charts, graphs and even enjoy PowerPoint presentations on the device. For the non-business class, the roomy display can be used for watching videos on YouTube, movies and better reading of web pages when on the go. If you like traveling, you won’t get bored with this the PhonePad 3 by your side!
Up to 4G LTE connectivity
As noted earlier, the reason this device is referred to as a phablet is because it carries all the characteristics of the phone. These include support for 4G LTE connectivity via dual-SIM slots. It is rare to come by a tablet that supports both Wi-Fi and cellular data connectivity, which makes the Tecno PhonePad 3 such a perfect device for many people. In fact, you can easily turn this phablet into your daily driver and not just for business purposes.
With 4G LTE connectivity, you will enjoy the fastest internet speeds in town and in case you are somewhere where there’s no LTE connectivity, the Tecno PhonePad 3 also supports 2G and 3G connectivity. So, you don’t have to worry when you travel to the village with this device as you’ll still be able to make calls, send messages as well as browse the internet as usual, although at reduced speeds.
Look around and show me a tablet that has a 13MP sensor on the back with a LED flash and AF and a 5MP shooter on the front. Well, the recently-launched Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 has these qualities, but you might run away very fast once you learn about the price. The Tab S3 is valued at a whopping $600 in the U.S. On the contrary, the Tecno PhonePad 3 is very affordable and still offers great photography specs.
Price and extras
Speaking of affordability, you can get your hands on the Tecno PhonePad 3 at about ksh 22,500. This is even cheaper than the smaller Tecno Phantom 6 and Phantom 6 Plus, yet it is equipped with some of the best specs on the market. There’s a powerful MediaTek MT8735W processor that is clocked at 1.3GHz and is paired with a 2GB RAM. The storage stands at 16GB, but it can be expanded via a microSD card.

For security purposes, the Tecno PhonePad 3 has a fingerprint scanner that is mounted on the side whereas keeping it alive is a massive 4100mAh battery unit. Software-wise, the PhonePad 3 phablet has Android 6.0 Marshmallow running the show. Since Tecno Mobile is targeting the business class with this device, it comes preinstalled with a number of business-focused apps such as Camscanner for scanning docs, Camcard for cards and contacts’ management as well as WPS Office for creating, editing and reading documents on the go.
