Looking for a budget smartphone in 2017? Tecno Camon CX and Infinix S2 Pro are two devices that you can’t afford to ignore.
Tecno Camon CX, commonly known as Tecno Camon C10, is one of the smartphones flying up there in the Tecno camera-oriented Camon devices. The Camon CX also comes with a scaled down variant going by the name Tecno Camon CX Air (more on this in a different piece).
Elsewhere, Infinix S2 Pro is finally here with us, in Kenya. The S2 Pro is a direct successor to 2016’s Infinix Hot S Pro. The company has deliberated and decided to throw in new devices under a different series tag, sleeker design, more power, and so on to entice more users.
For comparison, both Tecno Camon CX and Infinix S2 Pro are incredibly good devices to start with. Even so, not everything can be absolutely the same, in one way or the other, different specs must be better in one than the other. Here is the full comparison, read on.
The S2 Pro comes with a 5.2-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. There’re some real world differences when compared to the Camon CX. The Tecno gadget features a 5.5-inch IPS display as well as a much better resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels (400ppi), similar specs to its predecessor, Tecno Camon C9. Here, the Camon CX is the better device.
The Camon Series has been legendary in camera and photography and that’s not stopping any sooner. The latest entry, the Camon CX, gets better with a 16MP back shooter, from 13MP in the previous installment. For the front camera, the device ships with an impressive 16 MP camera coupled with a dual LED flash and 120-degree wide angle view for a stunning selfie experience. Besides, the rear shooter also sees a Ring flash alongside autofocus.
Apparently, Infinix has invested more on photography with more focus on the front unit. The S2 Pro sees a 13MP rear camera and monstrous dual front units of 13MP+8MP with a wide angle view of 135 degrees and a soft LED flash for better selfies even when in the dark. On the downside, the rear shooter can only capture 720p videos. Sad! Nonetheless, the Infinix S2 Pro still comes out on top, at least on paper.
Software and hardware
Out of the box, the Infinix S2 Pro is powered by a disappointing Android 6.0 Marshmallow while the Camon CX runs an acceptable Android 7.0 Nougat. Remember, Android O is almost out, so it’s quite saddening that S2 Pro buyers will have to be contented with Android Marshmallow and its cons.
Coupling the S2 Pro 3GB RAM, is an octa-core MediaTek MT6753 processor clocked at 1.3GHz along with a Mali T-720 GPU capped with a 32GB internal storage capacity. Not a bad combination at all for a budget handset, much will unfold as users throw in tasks though.
As earlier stated, the Camon CX runs Android 7.0 Nougat atop a better octa-core MediaTek MT6750T processor clocked at a faster speed of 1.5GHz, but has a smaller 2GB RAM. The internal memory is also smaller at 16GB, but is expandable up to 128GB via a microSD card. The S2 Pro definitely wins on the storage front!
Finally, Tecno Camon CX sees a pretty fast fingerprint scanner that unlocks your phone as fast as within 0.1 seconds. The gadget also supports 4G LTE network, its counterpart, the S2 Pro, supports up to 4G LTE connectivity. As for the fingerprint scanner, Infinix Mobility says that it’ll only take 0.2 seconds to unlock your S2 Pro. Here, the Tecno Camon CX carries the day.
It goes without say that battery is an important segment of any phone. In that respect, Tecno Camon CX comes with a 3200mAh unit with support for fast charging technology enabled while Infinix S2 Pro sees a slightly smaller 3000mAh unit with support for fast charging as well. Given the fewer pixels that the latter has to power compared to the former, the S2 Pro should promise much better battery life. On the contrary, the longer the phone stays alive will depend a lot on your usage habits.
Infinix S2 Pro is now available in Kenya and is retailing at Ksh. 15,699 on Jumia. Tecno Camon CX, on the other hand, was launched here on March 23, 2017, and is currently retailing at ksh 16,999 on Jumia, including a free flip cover! Another win for the S2 Pro.
