As usual with any product, before it is launched, there are lots of rumors, speculations, and leaks doing rounds about the LG G6, the successor to last year’s unimpressive LG G5.
Being a 2017 flagship from the company, the phone is expected to ship with the best available hardware and software specs this year. In fact, the LG G6 has been rumored to be sailing in the same ship as the likes of Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus in terms of hardware configuration, but new leaks are proving otherwise.
According to Forbes’ Sin Ben, the LG G6 will be shipping with last year’s Snapdragon 821 and not the new Snapdragon 835 as it has been speculated before. With the official launch of the new processor by Qualcomm at the CES 2017, many expected that devices that will be launched at the MWC 2017 will all come with the new processor on board. Well, it appears that this won’t be the case as the Snapdragon 835 won’t be available for mass shipping until after the release of Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus.
In case you didn’t know, Samsung is in charge of manufacturing the Snapdragon 835 SoC with its 10nm process. So, could Samsung be playing a little trick here as it looks to bounce back from the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco at the expense of its local and international competitor? This is quite interesting, but given that Samsung lost more than $5 billion through what could easily be termed as poor manufacturing procedures for batteries used on the Note 7, it wouldn’t want to suffer the same fate. As a result, it could easily be taking a more careful approach and not rushing things just so as to have the chipset ready for MWC 2017. It is probably why the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus won’t be here until mid-April.
Like HTC, LG seems to have run out of patience and as such, it will continue with announcing the G6 even without the new Snapdragon 835 processor. HTC unveiled the U Ultra that is powered by the Snapdragon 821, yet it could also have waited for the newer processor to come in. But seeing that the two companies – LG and HTC – haven’t been performing great in the smartphone market, it is understandable for them to keep on pushing the market with new devices as soon as possible. Don’t be surprised if both launch devices that are powered by the newer processor later in the year, with the HTC 10 and LG V20 still expected to be replaced at some point.
In another separate development, an image has been leaked and it is claimed to be for the same LG G6. The image shows that LG won’t be turning to curved screens just yet. Rather, the only curve you’ll find on the phone’s screen is around the corners. However, the phone is still expected to ship with the 5.7-inch QHD+ display screen that LG recently unveiled. According to The Verge, the flagship will come with very thin bezels, just like many other OEMs have been doing in the recent past.
The image only reveals the upper part of the supposed LG G6, showing off the thin top bezel and a selfie shooter placed on the left. The material in use will be glass and metal and like Samsung Galaxy S7, it will come with IP68 certification. Even though the G6 will still be keeping the 3.5mm headphone jack, reports are rife that the removable battery is now gone. But with the LG G5 featuring a dual-lens camera, we expect the same and an even better configuration on the LG G6. The fingerprint scanner should also keep its position on the back panel.
As noted earlier, the LG G6 will be announced at the MWC 2017 show in Barcelona, which takes place starting February 27th, but LG has scheduled a press conference a day earlier.
