In early May, we got our hands on what we believe will be the Tecno Phantom 7 hardware and software specs thanks to listings on Geekbench and GFXBench.
While the phone is not expected to be here until Q4 2017, the first image has just popped up showing a premium-looking design, albeit with a lot of resemblance to the flagship Apple iPhone 7 Plus. Not so long ago, I wrote an article highlighting the lack of innovation from Chinese OEMs as far as smartphone design is concerned and with the newly leaked Tecno Phantom 7 image, there’s really little to dispute about this argument.
As noted, the benchmark listings gave us details of what to expect when the Phantom 7 breaks cover later this year. The phone is a super-upgrade over its predecessor, the Phantom 6. The listed specs include a MediaTek Helio P25 paired with 4GB RAM (up from Helio P10 and 3GB RAM used on the Phantom 6) and a not-so-bad 32GB storage, which should be expandable via a microSD card. For the software, Android 7.0 Nougat (not Android 7.1) will run the show out of the box.
At the time, we speculated on the camera specs based on what the Helio P25 is capable of handling. According to MediaTek, this processor can support up to two 13MP sensors on the main camera, something that the newly leaked images do little to dispute. The images show off a dual-lens setup on the back that appears at the same position as the iPhone 7 Plus. The LED flash also takes the same position, with the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner taking the same position as the Apple logo on the iPhone flagship.
Thanks to GFXBench, we know that the Tecno Phantom 7 will debut with a 13MP camera on the back. Now that we have proof the setup will be dual and that the Helio P25 chipset can handle two such sensors, my guess is that the second sensor could also be a similar 13MP lens. How these two sensors will work is still a mystery, but given Tecno Mobile is trying so hard to emulate Apple, don’t be surprised if one sensor is a wide-angle lens while the other will be a telephoto lens, just like the iPhone 7 Plus.
The listing on GFXBench can confirm that the main camera will be able to capture 4K videos as well as support features such as autofocus, HDR and LED flash, among others. As for the front shooter, you get a 5MP sensor which can record up to 1080p videos. The image also shows a LED flash on the front camera, which should do a good job when taking selfies in the dark.
In terms of display size, the Tecno Phantom 7 will feature a massive 6-inch Full HD display screen and for the overall design, the leak points towards a plastic back, which should be a disappointment for Tecno fans. There are capacitive buttons on the front panel, but the image also shows an on-screen home button.
Now, it’s important to note that last year’s Tecno Phantom 6 was accompanied by a high-end Phantom 6 Plus. If anything, we expect this to be the case with this year’s Tecno Phantom 7 family. As a result, you can expect a more powerful Phantom 7 Plus that should probably keep the same design language and display size, but pack high-end specs that include a MediaTek Helio X30 (Phantom 6 Plus had Helio X20) alongside a massive 6GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage.
In general, the leaked Tecno Phantom 7 looks awesome and it will definitely be a huge improvement from the Phantom 6. My only problem is with the huge resemblance to the iPhone 7 Plus, which shows how poor or rather lazy smartphone OEMs are becoming as far as thinking outside the box is concerned. My hope is that Infinix Mobility, the closest competitor to Tecno Mobile, will come up with something more unique for the Infinix Zero 5 to set the two apart, hopefully.
The Tecno Phantom 7 will reportedly be unveiled after September, but the exact date is still unclear.
