The Huawei Y5 2017 model has secretly been integrated into the system and while the phone comes with a much better design than the current Huawei Y5 2016 model, the specs are still entry-level, albeit with some upgrades over the predecessor.
Back in June 2015, the Chinese OEM released the Huawei Y560. This phone was also known as Huawei Y5 and a year later, it was replaced by an Huawei Y5 II. As expected, the latter was an upgraded version of the former, featuring a bigger display screen, battery, camera and an even better processor. Similarly, the new Huawei Y5 2017 follows this same path, but since this phone belongs to the budget market, it still comes with entry-level specs.
The design is great, boasting a textured body with curvy lines, with the rear panel having been crafted with a unique-looking CD pattern around the main shooter. The phone is a little thinner than its predecessor, coming in at just 8.45mm compared to the 8.9mm thickness of the Y5 II. In terms of display, the Huawei Y5 2017 keeps the same 5-inch HD panel that was used on the 2016 edition, but there are some changes under the hood.
Where the 2016 model packs a MediaTek MT6735P for the 4G variant and MT6582 for the 3G variant, the just-launched Huawei Y5 2017 comes with a MediaTek MT6737T quad-core clocked at 1.4GHz. The RAM has been doubled to 2GB and so has the storage, which now brings you 16GB with room to expand via a microSD card slot.
Software-wise, the Huawei Y5 2017 will ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with the company’s EMUI 4.1 skin running on top. For the cameras, you get an 8MP main shooter with f/2.0 aperture and LED flash while the front gets a 5MP shooter, which is an upgrade from the 2MP lens used on last year’s model. To keep the phone alive is an impressive 3000mAh battery unit, a huge step up from the 2200mAh unit available in the outgoing model.
The phone also gets a new nifty feature known as Easy Key. This is where you will be able to use quick access actions such as a simple press, double press or even press-and-hold in order to open apps or favorite features. It gets even better as you can pre-determine what these quick actions do to meet your own desires.
Although the release date and pricing details are still unknown, the Huawei Y5 2017 will be available in up to five color variants of gray, white, gold, pink and blue. At the moment, you can grab the Huawei Y5 II (2016) at ksh 10,499, down from the usual ksh 16,000.
