Tecno Phantom 6 and the bigger Phantom 6 Plus are the company’s top tier smartphones from 2016 and like any other high-end phones released last year, users have been looking forward to receiving the update to Android Nougat on these two.
At some point, Tecno Mobile was reluctant with respect to giving out details on when users of the Phantom 6 and 6 Plus could expect to receive the Nougat treat. But after frustrated users took to the company’s products forum to vent their anger, Tecno finally gave out a date when the Phantom 6 Plus would be updated to the new Nougat OS.
At the time, the company said that the update to Android Nougat for the Tecno Phantom 6 Plus will kick off in August, but there was no mention of the Phantom 6. Well, this promise has truly been kept. As at the time of this writing, the Phantom 6 Plus is already receiving the update to Android 7.1.1 Nougat.
To update your Tecno Phantom 6 Plus to Android 7.1.1 Nougat, there are two methods you can opt for. The first and easiest is the OTA (over the air) method. Here, you only have to sit back and wait for a notification to download and install the OS on your phone. If this OTA delays reaching your device, you can force it to appear by heading to the phone’s Settings>About phone>System update. This should trigger the phone to check for the update manually and once found, you’ll get a prompt asking you to upgrade your phone over the air (OTA).
In the event that your Tecno Phantom 6 Plus is simply not getting the OTA notification, you have the option to turn to manual update. Here, you must first download the files containing the new Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS to your phone’s microSD card (T card) – here’s the download link. Make sure the files are saved directly to the SD card and not in some folder on the card.
After you’ve downloaded the files, head to the phone’s Settings>About phone>System update>Update from local and select the microSD card that holds the downloaded files. The on-screen instructions should be simple to understand, but don’t freak out when the phone switches off during the upgrade process – it’s normal. Leave the phone alone during the upgrade process, but do make sure that it is at least 50% charged or connect to a power source when upgrading.
It should take about 10 minutes and your Tecno Phantom 6 Plus will have finished upgrading to the new Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Do make sure that you check the version of the new software to ensure that the upgrade was indeed a success.
Once again, here’s the download link to the new OS, but remember this is only for Tecno Phantom 6 Plus users and not the standard Phantom 6 model. Ensure you have connected to the internet via Wi-Fi because the file size is huge, weighing 1.91GB.
