Future Google Pixel phones may use in-house Chipsets like Apple’s iPhones

Some companies such as Apple, Samsung, and Huawei have realized immense success in using custom processors in their smartphones and as it stands, future Google Pixel phones could borrow a page from these companies’ books.

Today, the search engine giant has confirmed that Manu Gulati, the guy who has been helping Apple develop in-house chips for lots of its successful iPhones, iPads and other iOS devices, is now the Lead SoC Architect at Google. This doesn’t come as a surprise, especially since we’ve already seen Google’s efforts in majoring in the hardware department.

The Google Nexus devices saw the search engine giant enter into partnerships with hardware companies in order to produce phones and tablets over the past eight or so years. However, things took a different direction last year, where the company started embracing a more hands-on approach with the Pixel and Pixel XL phones.

Now that someone with vast knowledge on what it takes to come up with a custom chipset is on board and the tech giant is also hunting for another one who fits the title of Mobile SoC CPU Architect, it is proof enough that the company wants its future Google Pixel phones to be powered by an in-house chipset.

This high profile hire might not be in time for the 2017 Google Pixel phones to debut with custom chipsets. In fact, we’ve seen several leaks suggesting that the Pixel and Pixel XL successors will come with the Snapdragon 835 under the hood, which is a Qualcomm chipset.

If Google is indeed thinking of taking this direction, it will be joining Apple, Samsung and Huawei in using in-house chipsets in their products, something that could deal a huge blow in Qualcomm’s chipset business.
