Deal: Samsung Z2 discounted to as little as Ksh 5,499, free 100MB data included

Samsung Z2 is one of the three Tizen-powered smartphones on the market and it’s getting a super discount at all Safaricom shops countrywide.

For the uninitiated, Tizen is Samsung’s own take on mobile operating systems, just like Android and iOS. However, the popularity of Android has meant that Tizen has been limited to just 4 devices, with the Samsung Z2 sandwiched by 2015’s Z1 and Z3 and this year’s Z4.

As you may have guessed, Samsung Z2 is not a phone for power users, rather, it’s an entry-level handset targeting first-time smartphone buyers. Prior to today, this phone was priced at Ksh 7,499, but you’ll now save a cool Ksh 2,000 when you buy it from a Safaricom shop countrywide. In addition, the telco will also give you a free 100MB data pack to kick off your smartphone life.

In terms of specs, the Z2 has a compact 4-inch TFT display screen with a 480p resolution and under the hood, you get a low-end Spreadtrum SC9830 processor, a quad-core unit clocked at 1.5GHz and paired with a RAM of 1GB. There’s 8GB of expandable storage, with the microSD card slot capable of handling up to 128GB.

Samsung Z2 has a 5MP camera on the back with f/2.2 aperture, LED flash and ability to record HD videos at 30 frames per second. The front shooter has a VGA sensor with an a smaller f/2.4 aperture, but it should get the job done, especially when in well-lit conditions.

One thing you might not like about this phone is the battery capacity, which is a poor 1500mAh removable unit, but with a 4-inch 480p screen, you should still get a decent battery life on this phone. You also get LTE and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity standards as well as Tizen 2.4 out of the box. I haven’t used this OS, but I bet it isn’t a bad start, at least for someone who has had no experience with Android or even iOS.
