Several non-Google devices have been updated to the latest Android 7.0 Nougat update, but it is only today that ASUS ZenFone 3 has just begun receiving the same update.
The ZenFone 3, which comes in several variants, was launched by the Taiwanese tech giant back in May 2016. Back then, the device came in with Android Marshmallow out of the box, but it is now receiving the current Android 7.0 Nougat via OTA.
In case you didn’t know, ASUS ZenFone 3 came in with quite a number of variants, including the flagship ZenFone 3 Deluxe and ZenFone 3 Ultra. But this update has only been confirmed for two variants of the series – the ZenFone 3 with model numbers ZE520KL and ZE552KL. Apart from the model numbers, these are phones are also separated by their screen sizes, with the former shipping with a 5.2-inch screen while the latter has a 5.5-inch screen, but both have the same 1080p resolution.
The ASUS ZenFone 3 models in question here have the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC that is paired with 4GB RAM, but you also get smaller 3GB RAM variants. The two RAM variants also mean you get two storage variants of 64GB for the former and 32GB for the latter. This storage is expandable via a microSD card storage, but this relies on the phone’s SIM 2 slot.
The pair has the same 16MP+8MP snappers on the back and front of each phone, but the main cameras are better-equipped with sweet features, having the likes of PDAF (and laser), 4-axis optical image stabilization and dual-tone LED flash. However, the smaller ZE520KL has a 2600mAh battery as compared to the larger 3000mAh unit on the ZE552KL. The design is the same, with a glass rear and a metallic frame. The fingerprint scanner is on the back panel.
The update is coming out as an OTA and such, not all units of the ZenFone 3 will be able to receive it at once. In fact, the rollout has reportedly begun in the Philippines, but it should start spreading to other parts of the globe in the coming days.
